Refrigerants in a climate positive built environment
The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) is hosting a workshop in partnership with AIRAH called “Refrigerants in a Climate Positive Built Environment” on Thursday, May 7.

The session will examine how refrigerant decisions made today will shape emissions, financial risks and regulatory exposure well into the 2040s. HVAC&R systems last 15–20 years, and without forward planning, the industry risks higher retrofit costs, supply shortages and stranded assets.
The key message of the workshop is that refrigerants are no longer a minor detail in building design.
The regulatory landscape is changing, with the Commonwealth government recently announcing that HFCs and HFOs will be covered under the chemicals management workplan. This regulation of refrigerants is set to extend well beyond the existing HFC phase-down.
The session will explore:
- Practical strategies to help future-proof systems and investments
- The growing impact of refrigerants on emissions and building performance
- The risks of delayed or short-term decision-making.
Speakers include AIRAH’s Advocacy and Policy Manager, Mark Vender; Jeremy Mansfield OAM, from Mansfield Advisory; and Taryn Cornell from GBCA.
Registrations are open here.
