A new discussion paper about the Victorian Energy Upgrades program has been released for public comment, to kick off the next stage of a major strategic review.
The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program is the Victorian government’s flagship energy savings and emissions reduction initiative, providing incentives for energy efficiency upgrades in residential and commercial buildings, many related to heating and cooling. According to the VEU program, more than 2.4 million Victorian households and 170,000 businesses have benefited from this initiative, reducing their energy usage and bills, and more than 80 million tonnes of carbon emissions have been abated since the program started in 2009.
In June 2024, the Victorian government began a strategic review of the VEU program.
The review aims to ensure the program continues to be effective, and that it supports the government’s policy objectives on electrification, energy affordability, emissions reduction, and reliability.
The review will also explore options to improve consumer protections, increase participation by households and businesses, and strengthen the integrity of the scheme.
Solar Victoria, which is leading the review, says it has undertaken extensive consultation and engagement over the past six months. The discussion paper, just released, is the next step in the review process.
Solar Victoria is seeking evidence-based submissions on the matters raised in the discussion paper, or on any matters relevant to the review’s terms of reference.
Responses to the discussion paper will be used to inform potential changes to the VEU program.
The discussion paper is open for feedback until March 10, 2025.
