NABERS to explore energy flexibility

Australia’s national building performance rating system is launching a feasibility study on incorporating energy flexibility into its framework.

It has been an action-packed year for NABERS, with a major update to the energy ratings system announced for 2030. The change will see all energy sources compared equally, in response to a grid that is rapidly decarbonising.

At the same time, NABERS has flagged that it will look at ways to incentivise the use of energy flexibility strategies that reduce strain on the grid. Energy flexibility is the capability of electricity consumers to change when they use, store or share electricity to better support a stable system powered by renewable energy.

In line with this, NABERS is developing a feasibility study to investigate the uptake, opportunities and barriers associated with energy flexibility in commercial buildings. It also outlines NABERS plans to recognise and support energy flexibility.

The study will be launched at a special webinar on Friday, July 31, from 1–2pm. This will include:

  • An introduction to the NABERS Energy Flexibility Feasibility Study
  • Key insights from the study
  • NABERS energy flexibility program of work
  • The benefits of energy flexibility, presented by ADP Consulting.
