Poorya Shaghaghi, Stud.AIRAH, has taken home the Student of the Year – Higher Education or Research award at the 2024 AIRAH Awards.

Shaghaghi is the Mechanical Asset Engineer at Viva Energy Australia and a researcher with the Fluid Mechanics Research Group at the University of Melbourne. His research primarily focuses on buoyancy-driven flows, ventilation flows, stratification phenomena, and infection control.

Shaghaghi has recently accepted a prestigious decarbonisation studentship as a prospective PhD student at the Institute for Energy and Environmental Flows, University of Cambridge, starting in 2025.

In 2023, Shaghaghi’s work on displacement ventilation won AIRAH’s Excellence in Research award and was presented at the 2022 Australasian Fluid Mechanics Conference (AFMC). In a pioneering full-scale experiment, he assessed the efficacy of displacement ventilation retrofits in a vacant building using experimental and numerical fluid dynamics modelling.
