Frascold launches semi-hermetic ammonia compressor

Italian compressor manufacturer Frascold has launched a new semi-hermetic ammonia screw compressor range called “Aluminium”.

The range was developed to meet the storage and freezing needs of large and medium-sized industries, operating in a temperature range between +5°C and -40°C (such as for the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries), where ammonia plays a central role.

The range has been named Aluminium because that is the metal used in the compressor motor. Frascold says copper and its alloys are vulnerable to corrosion in the event of contact with ammonia.

“The adoption of aluminium combined with permanent magnets marks a significant step in terms of chemical resistance and operational continuity over time,” says the company.

The eight models available, for both low (ALU-L) and medium temperature (ALU-H) applications, allow a volumetric displacement between 315 and 470 m³/h at 50 Hz and between 378 and 564 m³/h at 60 Hz. The motor power ranges between 130 and 160 HP equivalent to 97–120 kW, operating in a wide frequency range from 30 to 60 Hz.

The sizing pressure reaches 20.5 bar on the low pressure side and 30 bar on the high pressure side, while the maximum discharge temperature is 90°C. The evaporation temperatures also highlight the considerable application flexibility of the range, extending from -45°C to -10°C for the low (LT) and from -20°C to +5°C for the medium temperature (MT).

The balancing and integration of the motor inside the compressor also reduces noise emissions, and the integration between variable frequency drive (VFD) and variable internal volume control (Vi) allows for optimised operating performance.

Frascold is available in Australia here.
