The South Australian government is undertaking an extensive review of laws that govern the building and construction industry, and is seeking feedback from industry stakeholders.

The review will focus on opportunities to enhance industry compliance, protect and inform consumers, and support the building sector to deliver high-quality building work.

The review will consider:

  • New registration requirements and increased oversight for building inspectors, owner builders and developers
  • Improvements to dispute resolution processes for consumers and building industry workers
  • Continuing professional development for building industry workers
  • New enforcement tools and increased penalties to address poor practices within industry
  • Changes to building work contract requirements, including new rules for the use of sunset clauses in off-the-plan sales.

This review coincides with a separate review of Builder’s Indemnity Insurance.

The government has released a discussion paper as part of the consultation, and is inviting feedback until January 31, 2025.
