Reforming Victoria’s building regulatory system

The Building Reform Expert Panel is inviting feedback on the Framework for Reform and possible improvements to Victoria’s building system.

A group established by the Victorian government to lead its review of the building legislative and regulatory system, the Panel is accepting feedback until May 19. The Panel has been asked to advise on changes to Victoria’s building regulatory system, to ensure it:

• Delivers safe, compliant, durable, affordable and sustainable housing and buildings efficiently and effectively
• Protects consumers and improves confidence in the industry and regulators
• Supports skilled and experienced practitioners to carry out compliant and safe practices
• Supports regulators to effectively and efficiently enforce compliance.

The review comprises of three stages to create a new state Building Act in 2023. Stage one includes collecting feedback on practitioner registration, building approvals, regulatory oversight and consumer protection.

“The importance of ensuring that we have a modern and effective regulatory framework for the building design, construction and maintenance industries cannot be overstated,” according to the Framework for Reform.

The review aims to create a whole-scale reform across the state’s building industry. Industry is invited to provide feedback on specific areas of the paper to assist the Panel. For more information, please click here.
