New training on the way for smoke control features

A new project is under way to develop training materials for assessing and reporting on smoke control features of mechanical services systems.

Release 3.0 of the UEE electrotechnology training package includes a unit to cover the installation and maintenance of smoke control equipment, including fire dampers, smoke dampers, smoke and heat vents, and mechanical services air handlers. The new materials will cover the assessment and reporting on the same equipment.

The project will develop one new unit of competency and one new skill set in the electrotechnology training package (UEE). These will cover the skill and knowledge requirements in accordance with essential services fire measures legislation. The new unit will be added as an elective in several appropriate refrigeration and air conditioning qualifications.

“Technicians who assess and report on air handling equipment for fire and smoke control systems, must be competent to do the work safely and accurately,” reads the project documentation.

“Building owners carry the responsibility of ensuring that the individuals they engage under a service contract have the knowledge and skill to do the work and to provide reports to the owners.

“The new unit and skill set will enable employers to meet current regulatory requirements.”

The Electrotechnology Industry Reference Committee has now established a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for this project. Updates will be provided through the project page.
