The Energy Efficiency Commission (EEC) is running a Webinar on September 6 to look at the skills required to retrofit Australia’s commercial buildings.

The goal is to map the ecosystem of professional and trade roles involved in providing energy and related services to commercial buildings. This includes NABERS Energy ratings, services under state-based energy efficiency and flexibility schemes, and integrated building energy retrofits (IBERs). It will also look a workers who support commercial building owners, managers and occupiers to improve their energy performance.

The project team intends to identify gaps in professional development pathways – including training, qualification and/or certification – that are hampering the development of this ecosystem, and clarify how industry, government and other stakeholders can work together to fill these gaps.

“As Australia’s net zero transformation kicks into gear, we need to ensure that we have the right people, in the right places, at the right time to deliver the necessary upgrades,” says the EEC.

“Commercial buildings have long led Australia’s energy productivity and emissions reduction leader tables, and consequently have a more sophisticated professional ecosystem supporting them. But this doesn’t necessarily mean that we have enough appropriately skilled people in the industry to deliver the sheer scale of the transformation necessary, and that’s something that we’re looking to rectify.

“We’re keen to draw on the significant experience of our networks as we kick off the next phase of developing the future energy workforce: mapping what exactly needs to be done and who needs to do it.”

The EEC welcomes stakeholders that are interested in learning more about the project, raising any questions or queries, and providing initial feedback.

The webinar will be held at 11am (AEST) on September 6.
