MECLA to bust myths about embodied carbon

The Material and Embodied Carbon Leaders Alliance (MECLA) is holding a Spotlight event at 3.30pm (AEST) on May 18 to bust myths about embodied carbon.

“Low embodied carbon materials continue to be clouded by myths, which prevent large-scale uptake in the built environment,” say the organisers. “Some of these so-called myths claim that low embodied carbon materials substantially drive up construction costs, are inferior or not technically comparable to standard products, are difficult to work with or are simply not available in Australia.

“The MECLA Spotlight on myth busting demonstrates that these barriers are often perceptions rather than real barriers to uptake. Our speakers will address these perceptions, presenting case studies and using their experiences in the current market to assess what is and isn’t possible right now and the in the foreseeable future when it comes to the use of low-carbon building materials and deviating from specifications and standards. To put it another way, they’ll be blowing up a whole bunch of embodied carbon myths.”

Speakers at the event include Dylan Viviers, National Specification Manager at Holcim, Gary Hulme, Business Development Manager at Hymix, Thomas Rainger, Sustainability Advisor at Laing O’Rourke, Melissa Herrmann, Specifications Manager at Capral, and Matt Di Marco, Managing Director at Inti.

The speakers will be joined by Nicole Sullivan, Head of Strategy and Impact Australia at Think-Step ANZ in a panel discussion addressing what is required to change these perceptions and move the construction sector towards more broadscale uptake of low embodied carbon building materials.
