Sonia Holzheimer, M.AIRAH, will present a full-day online course on changes to Section J in the 2019–2022 edition of the National Construction Code (NCC) on Tuesday, July 30. Holzheimer, who sits on the Women of AIRAH Special Technical Group, takes over from former presenter Ken Thomson, F.AIRAH.
The course will present the recent changes to Section J and provide an overview of all Section J energy-efficiency requirements. It looks in detail at Part J6, the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions, and methods of meeting the compliance requirements.
Attendees will learn about code compliance pathways and the associated details, helping them understand what to consider in their HVAC&R system design to ensure energy efficiency provisions are met.
Although Part J6 is the focus, the course also explores all Section J provisions and the significance of all Section J NCC requirements. Its aim is to help professionals deliver energy-efficient buildings that contribute to a low-energy future.

- Performance pathways and using verification methods
- HVAC&R-related examples of performance pathways
- J6 – fans, pumps, duct and pipe sizing, calculation tools

- The crossover between Volume One and Volume Two energy efficiency requirements specific to HVAC&R.

About Sonia Holzheimer
Holzheimer is a mechanical engineer with over 20 years of experience in Cairns’ building and construction industry. After graduating from university, she launched her career with boutique building services firm MGF Consultants (NQ).
At MGF (NQ), Holzheimer was involved in the design of Australia’s first 5-star NABERS (formerly AGBR) building, William McCormack Place I, as well as Australia’s first 6-star Green Star building constructed in the tropics, William McCormack Place II.
In 2014, Holzheimer co-founded SEQUAL, a Cairns based multi-discipline engineering firm. A Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland, a Fellow of Engineers Australia and an AIRAH member for over 20 years, she is a trusted advisor to institutions like JCU, Cairns Hospital, Ports North and the Cairns Regional Council.
