New heating and cooling innovations hit the market all the time, but this really breaks the mould for residential units – all-in-one ductless heat pumps.

MRCOOL Monoblock

In a world driven by aesthetics, removing the outdoor condenser unit in a traditional split system seems like a dream come true.

And some companies are rolling out the new technology (or variants of it), where all of the components are housed in a single unit.

In the U.S., MRCOOL has just launched the MRCOOL® Monoblock MTHP Series. It is a compact, all-in-one wall-mounted heat pump that can provide heating and cooling without the need for an outdoor condenser or refrigerant-line installation.

But what does “monoblock system” mean? Climate control product specialist Evolar describes monoblock systems as being similar to portable air conditioners, except they’re fixed to a wall. The unit draws in air using a ventilation function, and then expels the air through ducts and vents to the outside.

According to Evolar, monoblock units also consume less electricity than a portable air conditioner due to the monoblock’s higher efficiency.

MRCOOL says the compact heat pump “solves major HVAC challenges in installation spaces where traditional systems are restricted”. The units are designed for smaller spaces, and are being marketed as “a completely DIY-friendly installation” because zero refrigerant handling is required.

Other companies have also developed similar technology, such as LG’s THERMA V monobloc system. LG says the indoor and outdoor units are combined as one module, and there is no need for refrigerant piping because the outdoor unit is only connected to water piping.

Closer to home, the Polaris GreenSmart Monobloc series uses M60 natural refrigerant that’s made in Australia. The systems also feature no outdoor units, and Polaris Technologies says the Engas M60 hydrocarbon refrigerant is up to 34% more energy-efficient than its chemical counterparts.
