Australian company Aeris Environmental has developed a new polymer coating for HVAC filters designed to prevent the spread of airborne viruses, including COVID-19. Aeris Guard Bioactive Filter Treatment contains a readily biodegradable active biocide that the company says kills 99.99 per cent of bacteria and viruses including SARS-CoV-2 on the polymer coating.

“A single application helps control and prevent the growth of bacteria and mould for up to 12 months,” says the company. “In addition, the Aeris filter treatment significantly improves the ability of dust filters to remove even finer dust particles than before treatment.

“The filter treatment is based on patented technology and is proven to extend the life of treated filters, enhance energy consumption, and improve airflow by up to 300 per cent.”

Aeris Environmental Chairman Maurie Stang says the new product could improve air quality on public transport and help ensure safer travel for all Australians.

“Many Australians rely on public transport to get to work, go shopping or for education,” says Stang. “Old or poorly maintained HVAC filters on buses and trains that recirculate air, increase the risk of viruses and bacteria spreading among passengers.

“Transport authorities should consider solutions that improve indoor air quality, are scientifically proven, and compatible with existing HVAC systems to ease concerns of the spread of virus on public transport. Aeris Guard Bioactive Filter Treatment increases filtration efficacy without decreasing airflow or placing extra strain on ventilation systems. To that end, we are currently in conversation with a number of Australian transport bodies about making buses and other modes of transport safer for everyone.”

The product is already being used in the United States, with more than 350 Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) buses treated with the new air filter spray.

“Throughout the pandemic, MCTS has worked to ensure that buses continue to safely serve county residents,” says Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “The introduction of this innovative air filtration treatment system is just the latest tool we’re using to keep our employees and riders safe.”
