Victoria gets view of professional registration act

Work continues in Victoria on the implementation of the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019, which will come into operation on July 1, 2021.

The scheme will apply to engineers providing professional engineering services in and for Victoria in the areas of mechanical, electrical, fire safety, civil and structural engineering.

Public consultation opens on August 26 and closes on October 7, 2020.

As part of the consultation process, the following materials will be available for comment:

• Guidance material on key terms in the Act such as the meaning of professional engineering service, prescriptive standards, direct supervision and the five areas of engineering
• The proposed Professional Engineers Registration (General, Exemption and Assessment Scheme Fees) Regulations 2019
• The proposed Code of Conduct for Professional Engineers
• Options for setting fees for the registration and endorsement of professional engineers.

The materials have been developed in consultation with the peak professional engineering bodies and the Victorian Government agencies involved in delivery of infrastructure and engineering services.

The Victorian Parliament passed the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019 in August 2019, and it will come into operation on July 1, 2021. It will require engineers who provide professional engineering services in Victoria, or outside Victoria if the services are intended for Victoria, to be registered.

Registration will not be required if a person works under the direct supervision of a registered practising professional engineer or only in accordance with a prescribed standard.
