Queensland introduces digital licenses

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) has announced that it will start introducing digital licences, developed in partnership with the Queensland government as part of Queensland’s Digital Licence app.

The rollout will be conducted across three tranches between September and November 2025. Mechanical services licences, including air conditioning and refrigeration, are expected to be available in late 2025. More information, including licence types in each rollout phase, is available on the QBCC website.

The webpage explains that a digital licence carries the same legal status as the physical licence card, which licensees will still receive. While digital licences are optional and physical licences will continue, the QBCC is encouraging licensees to explore the benefits of going digital.

The QBCC says the change marks an important step in delivering on its commitment to strengthening the integrity of the industry, streamlining compliance, and supporting a modern, digitally enabled and customer-focused licensing system.

“It is something that the new government promised and something that the industry expects of a modern and contemporary regulator,” says Angelo Lambrinos, CEO and Commissioner. “And although it is just a small step in our digital transformation, it is an important signal that we are listening and we are responding.”
