R U OK? be a mate

Young workers have highlighted the life changing role played by their mates in a series of lived experience interviews with R U OK?. The video interviews are available for free on the R U OK? website.

The case studies reinforce the call for young trainees and apprentices to look out for their mates. As the organisation highlights, when we’re going through tough times, mates are often best placed to understand and lend support.

Support for apprentices

Almost one in two young people who start apprenticeships will not complete them.

Transitioning from school to tools (whether it’s a job site, kitchen or office) can be a confronting experience. While many enter their careers from a place of passion, they find learning something new in a tough environment can take a toll on their mental wellbeing.

In the videos, three apprentices and trainees – Megan, Thomas, and Tyler – share their personal stories. According to R U OK?, these stories aim to help other apprentices and trainees understand how important it is to regularly check in with mates, pay attention to life events, and recognise signs a mate might be struggling.
