A new guide, Best practice for energy management in government operations, provides advice to help governments put in place policies and programs that will drive systematic energy performance improvements in their own operations.
The guide has been developed by the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC), the Energy Efficiency Council (EEC), the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), and Property Council of Australia (PCA).
“When it comes to decarbonising our built environment, it is crucial that governments lead by example, taking advantage of the cost-effective energy-management opportunities that exist in their own operations,” says EEC CEO Luke Menzel.
Menzel points out that governments own and occupy more than 25 per cent of the commercial building stock in Australia, including schools and hospitals. They also run energy-intensive facilities such as water supply and treatment plants.
“Smart energy management can reduce energy use in facilities by 30 per cent or more,” Menzel says, “while strengthening government budgets, creating jobs, and slashing emissions.”
The guide profiles governments that are leading the charge, and provides guidance for all governments on how they can put in place the policies and programs that will drive systematic energy performance improvements in their own operations.
The guide will be launched by the Victorian Assistant Treasurer Danny Pearson, who will discuss the role of energy management in the Victorian government’s own decarbonisation efforts. He will also provide an update on the Greener Government Buildings program.
This launch will be followed by a panel discussion featuring leading public servants who have driven major energy performance projects in government departments and agencies.
