Although a new national training package for refrigeration and air conditioning has just been released, work is already starting on the next iteration. Two new units will be developed on variable refrigerant flow systems, and fire and smoke control systems.
Australian Industry Standards (AIS) is looking for subject matter experts to help review and develop these materials. Those selected will become part of the technical advisory committees (TACs) for the new units.
Variable refrigerant flow AC systems
One new unit of competency and one new skill set will be developed to standardise training for installing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining variable refrigerant flow (VRF) air conditioning systems.
This project was prompted by the increasing use of these specialised and complex systems. Although the operation logic of the VRF is proprietary for each manufacturer, generic underpinning skills and knowledge of the components’ operating principles and requirements are required to enable the technician to work on systems from a range of manufacturers.
For this project, the Industry Reference Committee (IRC) is seeking experts:
- With experience in the installation, commissioning, service and maintenance of VRF air conditioning systems
- RTOs that will deliver the new content
- Suppliers of VRF air conditioning systems.

Fire and smoke control systems
One new unit of competency and one new skill set is being developed to ensure RAC technicians meet regulatory requirements for maintenance of air-handling equipment for fire and smoke control systems including fire dampers, smoke and heat vents, and mechanical services air handlers.
For this project, the IRC is seeking experts:
- With experience in maintenance of emergency lighting and alarm systems and fire and smoke control systems
- RTOs who will deliver the new content
- Air conditioning technicians and electricians
- Experts on AS1851 Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment
- State/territory regulators of fire protection systems and equipment.
