The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) has released a request for tender for case studies and analysis of energy efficiency for refrigerated spaces. This work will help determine whether such spaces will become regulated through the National Construction Code (NCC).

The case studies will be site-specific, providing illustrative examples across the range of types of refrigerated spaces. Those supplying the case studies will be required to consider the key design characteristics that influence the energy use of the facility. These will be compared with energy-saving potential to develop a “minimum energy-efficient practice”.

Suppliers of case studies will also be required to explore the drivers of design decisions that affect energy efficiency, particularly the factors leading to sub-optimal outcomes.

Finally, case study suppliers will provide their conclusions on the status of energy efficiency in refrigerated spaces, the potential for regulation, and recommendations for further work.

Tenders are due by February 8, 2023, and the project is expected to be completed by May 19, 2023.
