The Solar Academy of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme and the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) are hosting a webinar at 4pm AEST on Friday, September 27 about manufacturing and system design for reliability and durability in solar thermosyphon hot water collectors.

As part of the IEA SHC Solar Academy webinar series, experts in solar hot water collector manufacturing, design, and operation will come together to discuss the reliability and durability issues that thermosyphon systems face when installed in the global south like southern Africa, China, and other regions. Topics will include stagnation/over-temperature events, high irradiance levels, lack of supply water, corrosion, and more.

The webinar series aims to identify the most suitable solar-derived hot water technologies for now and 2030, focusing on the development of solar thermal thermosyphon systems and solar photovoltaic self-consumption hot water systems – both of which are low-maintenance, cost-effective, and offer potential for further innovation.

Speakers include:

  • Prof. Robert Taylor, UNSW, Australia – Introduction and overview
  • Prof. Li Bojia , Solar Energy Application Center, China Academy of Building Research, China – Initial results / findings on system “Reliability and Durability”
  • Jiao Qingtai, Chief engineer of Solareast Group, China – Current situation and development of solar hot water in China
  • Rudi Moschik, AEE INTEC, Austria – Current situation and development of solar hot water in Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

After the presentations, the session will include a panel discussion at 5pm on best practices and the potential ways forward by manufacturers, trainers, installers, and end-users in how to mitigate reliability and durability issues for solar hot water for 2030.

The presentations and panel session include separate registration links:

The recordings of the webinars and the presentations will be made available after the webinars.
