Reliable Controls has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers (CGE).
An initiative of Canada’s Top Employers, the CGE honour is given in recognition of employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness.
Part of CGE’s evaluation criteria looks at the company’s environmental initiatives and programs, and the extent to which they have been successful in reducing their environmental footprint.
Employees at Reliable Controls are encouraged to use alternative transportation to get to work, with financial incentives for cycling, walking, car-pooling, and use of public transit.
At the office, employees can adjust the lighting levels and thermal comfort in their workspace using a smartphone app. The building automation system controls everything from a daylight harvesting system, radiant in-floor heating, and air-quality sensors to integrated watershed management and energy efficiency systems.
An ISO 9001– and 14001–certified organisation, Reliable Controls says it uses a quality and environmental management system to assist with the environmental objectives of the business. As part of their commitment to LEED certification, they have also implemented a sustainable purchasing policy.
Their manufacturing facility in Victoria follows the WEEE, RoHS 2, and R2 directives, which set collection, recycling, and recovery targets for electrical goods and restrict the use of certain hazardous materials in electrical and electronics products. A robust composting and recycling program diverts waste from landfills and helps reduce the company’s environmental impact.
“Reliable Controls provides simple, flexible control systems that balance the comfort, efficiency, and sustainability of buildings around the world,” says the company.
“Our commitment to a triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit informs all aspects of day-to-day operations, including the provision of a healthy, socially responsible working environment.”
The CGE honour is not the first time Reliable Controls has been recognised for its sustainable efforts. The Reliable Controls Headquarters Annex building located in Victoria, British Columbia was awarded LEED Platinum certification in November 2013.
LEED is a rating system for buildings, homes, and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. LEED Platinum certification is the highest rating awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
