Expanding the NCC energy pathway

The Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH) is compiling input from members on a NABERS-proposed update to a verification method in the 2022 National Construction Code (NCC).

NABERS is proposing a modification of JV1 NABERS Energy for Offices. The method currently uses Commitment Agreements to demonstrate energy efficiency requirements for office buildings.

The modification would extend the JV1 Verification Method to allow additional types of buildings rated by NABERS to also demonstrate compliance with JP1.

The additional buildings would include hotels, shopping centres and common areas in apartment buildings.

The foundations for this pathway already exist. Its key benefit would be removing the need for two or three expensive and separate energy models to be completed for buildings using Commitment Agreements and demonstrating Section J compliance. Commitment Agreement targets also provide a key link between design intent and actual operational efficiency.
