The Queensland Parliament’s Education, Employment and Training Committee will be holding three community forums and a public hearing briefing about the delivery of vocational education and training (VET) for regional, rural and remote Queensland in July 2023.

The committee is keen to hear directly from workers, employers, and their representatives as part of its inquiry. It is particularly interested in hearing about how well the current VET system serves communities in regional, rural and remote areas, and what can be done to improve it.

The inquiry will examine: the role of public providers in VET delivery in these areas; the major barriers to the provision of localised and place-based VET, and priority areas and cohorts in Queensland; existing programs that might assist in reducing barriers or supporting priority cohorts in accessing localised and place-based VET; examples of successful localised VET models and how learnings might be applied in other locations; and opportunities to facilitate improvements in these areas.

The committee invites all concerned parties to participate in the upcoming community forums and the public hearing.

The community forums will be held at:

  • Cairns TAFE Campus, Cairns – Monday, July 10, from 5.30pm–7.30pm
  • Thursday Island TAFE Campus, Thursday Island – Tuesday, July 11, from 3.30pm–5.30pm
  • Roma TAFE Campus, Roma – Thursday, July 13, from 3.30pm–5.30pm.

The public hearing and departmental briefing will be held at:

  • the Parliamentary Annexe, Brisbane – Friday, July 14, 12.30pm–4.30pm.

Anyone unable to attend in person can opt to participate via phone or (in the case of the Brisbane event) by teleconference.
