Setting the guidelines for indoor pollutants

After its launch late last year, the ARC Training Centre for Advanced Building Systems Against Airborne Infection Transmission, has scheduled its first guest webinar.

The free webinar will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, from 2–3pm and will be presented by Professor Tunga Salthammer of the Fraunhofer WKI, Germany.

Professor Salthammer will discuss the concept of the Committee on Indoor Guide Values of the German Federal Environment Agency. The Agency defines two guideline values: GV I and GV II.

GV II is an adverse-effect-related value based on current toxicological and epidemiological knowledge of an effect threshold, usually the lowest-observed-adverse-effect concentration (LOAEC) or a benchmark concentration of the target compound from human or animal studies.

GV I is the concentration of a substance in indoor air for which, when considered individually, there is no evidence at present that even lifelong exposure is expected to have any adverse health impacts.

Professor Salthammer will also look at other guide value concepts and available databases.

The webinar provides an overview on the current international state-of-the-art of guide values, hygiene-based guideline concepts and reference values. It will also explain how these guidelines are applied as criteria in private and public buildings, for example in school environments.
