AIRAH and the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) Australasia are hosting a joint Building Simulation Conference in Brisbane from July 20–21.
Boasting a theme of “Carbon and climate responsive – Getting it done”, the conference will explore the possibility of using building simulation to help ameliorate some of the profoundly challenging issues climate change places in front of us.
Priya Gandhi, M.AIRAH, from the technical organising committee says simulation is pivotal to achieving carbon-responsive outcomes in the built environment.
“We are in a climate crisis,” Gandhi says. “We need to accelerate the uptake of climate-responsive and sustainable solutions in the built environment in order to meet the Paris Agreement targets and limit global warming to no more than 1.5°C. Simulation can help us by providing much quicker answers to our questions – from which HVAC systems will work best in which climate and building type, to how changes in how we use our buildings will impact carbon emissions. It can also give us insights into how our buildings might respond to the changing climate.”
The conference is designed to educate, share, and build the knowledge about how simulation contributes to carbon- and climate-responsive outcomes both at a building and precinct scale. It will feature leading industry experts addressing six key conference themes:
- Paving the way for the energy transition
- Climate change and adaptive design
- Resilience and regenerative design
- Health and indoor environment quality
- Existing buildings
- Future of cities and the workplace.
Four international keynote speakers will address the conference, including the University of Melbourne’s Jen Martin, who will address how critical it is that we innovate our ways of communication, not simply our methods of modelling or designing sustainable built environments.
