The adoption deadline for the new electrotechnology training package UEE11, which includes various refrigeration and air conditioning qualifications, has been extended from October 5, 2022 until January 31, 2023.

Within the HVAC&R industry, there is particular interest in the roll-out of the new Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration qualification UEE32220. Importantly, it includes new material on the safe handling of A2/A2L refrigerants unit. Together with the existing hydrocarbon refrigerant unit, this forms the flammable refrigerant unit of competency.

In January 2022 the Electrotechnology Industry Reference Committee (IRC) applied to the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) for the extension. The application was made based on disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic across 2021.

Another concern was the disruption to students from changing packages midway through a term. The October changeover date would have required a large number of students to re-enrol in the new course. By delaying the transition until January, the administrative burden on TAFEs and registered training organisations should be significantly eased.
