Refrigerants Australia releases statement on PFAS
Refrigerants Australia has released a draft statement containing information on the use of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Refrigerants Australia notes that PFAS have been described in media reports as a large class of synthetic chemicals that persist in the environment for extended periods because they are unable to break down over time.
“These claims are frequently framed in sensational terms, but the underlying issues are considerably more complex,” the statement reads. “Industry decision-making and regulatory frameworks must be informed by comprehensive, evidence-based assessments rather than media narratives intended to provoke public alarm.”
The statement presents information on PFAS generally, and on trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), which some HFO refrigerants break down into. It also includes information about restrictions on PFAS and TFA impacting the HVAC&R industry.
The full statement is available at the Refrigerants Australia website.
