The Global Cooling Prize Supervisory Board and Operating Council of the Prize have announced that the Prize timeline will be extended.

The Global Cooling Prize is a global competition designed to spur development of a radically more energy efficient cooling technology.

The decision comes as a result of the global escalation of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The deadline has been pushed to August 22, 2020 – a three-month extension from the previous deadline of May 22. The final adjudication and award events will now occur in February and March 2021.

The organisers say the new timeline should allow the prize organisers and finalists more time to plan for the delivery of working prototypes.

“It has become increasingly clear that in order to continue to prioritise the health and safety of all who are associated with the Prize … it is both appropriate and necessary to extend the Prize timeline,” the team said in a statement.

Due to the dynamic circumstances surrounding the viral outbreak, the organisers say this may not be the final extension.
