Entries open for ASHRAE-UNEP award

ASHRAE and UNEP are now accepting entries for the 2024 Lower-GWP Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Innovation Award.

ASHRAE and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) are now accepting entries for the 2024 Lower-GWP Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Innovation Award. The award encourages the implementation of projects in developing countries that minimise global warming through HVAC&R management.

The International Energy Agency estimates that air conditioning and ventilation alone account for 20 per cent of global electricity use. With climate change pushing global temperatures up, there is an increasing need for refrigeration and air conditioning to keep growing populations safe and to meet the needs of industries agriculture, healthcare, and data transmission.

As such, the timely transition to refrigerants with lower global warming potential (GWP) is vital.

The award

The Lower-GWP Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Innovation Award focuses on new technological concepts in developing countries that minimise the global warming potential (GWP) of refrigerants. Individuals working alone or in teams are eligible for the award, which consists of two categories:

  • Residential applications
  • Commercial/industrial facility.

Projects will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Innovative aspects in transforming conventional concepts (40 per cent)
  • Technical replicability to developing countries (25 per cent)
  • Extent of need (25 per cent)
  • Economic feasibility to developing countries, including energy efficiency (10 per cent).

Applications

ASHRAE and UNEP are accepting entries for the 2024 awards until August 15, 2024. There is no cost to enter. The individuals named in the selected project submissions will be recognised at UNEP and ASHRAE events and in the organisations’ publications. ASHRAE membership is not a requirement for submission.

Applicants can submit entries for the 2024 Lower-GWP Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Innovation Award via the ASHRAE website.
