Bitzer chills at waterfront hotel

A new refrigeration system featuring Bitzer compressors and condensers has been installed in Hotel Alsik, the biggest hotel in the Danish-German border region around the Flensburg Fjord.

The hotel, located on Sønderborg’s waterfront, opened last year. Its construction and development was focused on sustainability, in support of the town’s goal of being CO2-neutral by 2029.

Part of that vision involves fitting out its walk-in cold stores and freezer rooms with high-performance refrigeration solutions that deliver lower energy costs.

Housed in the cellar, the large refrigeration system ensures the cooling of the cold stores and freezer rooms that are distributed across the hotel’s 19 floors. The system includes ten Bitzer Ecoline semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors with water-cooled shell and tube condensers from the Bitzer K-3 series.

The water-cooled condensing units ensure cooling to the correct temperatures in the hotel’s various kitchens, cold stores and freezer rooms. The design of the compressors allows the use of low-GWP refrigerants like R449A and R513A.

The components were supplied by wholesaler H. Jessen Jürgensen A/S and fitted by Climate A/S. Carsten Pedersen.

At the moment, the heat generated by the system is being transferred from the closed refrigerating circuit to a free cooler. Hotel Alsik is looking at the possibility of exploiting this heat, for example, in the form of a heat pump for domestic hot water or space heating.
