Biomimetic fans improve ventilation

German ventilation and control company, Ziehl-Abegg has worked with the Motorwerk Berlin to reduce aerosol risk by improving ventilation design with biomimetic fans.

The Motorwerk Berlin is an event location in Berlin’s Pankow district, which hosts events such as Germany’s Next Top Model and new car presentations by Porsche and Daimler.

CEO at Motorwerk, Dr Michael Gordon, says the company installed the fans to increase air quality and reduce the risk of coronavirus.

“We were able to achieve an enormous increase in the air quality without any disruptive noise,” he says.

“In [our] latest event, 250 people spent several hours in the Motorwerk.”

CO^₂ sensors monitor the air quality and regulate the fans during events, and the ceiling fans provide air circulation. During its last event, the CO₂ level in the indoor air was maintained at approximately 530ppm.

CEO of Ziehl-Abegg, Peter Fenkl, says it was a special challenge to install the ventilation system, and that the company enhanced the fans to achieve the optimum level in terms of acoustics.
